Chrysler Motors fires 13 staff in following of scandal

A whistleblower news report involved Chrysler in a scandal over the actions of plant workers. Chrysler Motors plant staff were discovered using drugs and consuming during their lunch break. It begun with an anonymous tip to a local news station. The news station sent in undercover reporters who broke the news. A scandal broke out as a result. Chrysler Motors pledged to bring about a swift end. Chrysler acted quickly. Not long following the report aired, the individuals in question were all put on suspension. There are 2 of the individuals involved nevertheless on suspension, when 13 others have been let go.

Sipping on a lot more than gas

A tip was received by Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK 2 concerning the staff from the Jefferson North plant, according to USA Today. The plant only handles one vehicle. It is where the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees are assembled. The station was tipped off that workers from the plant would go to a local park to drink alcohol and smoke what appeared to be marijuana. The ritual went on for five consecutive days, until an anchor asked them what the heck they were doing. The men were followed back to the plant by the investigative team. To make matters worse, the investigative report comes days after a visit and stump speech by President Obama.

Chrysler initially placed 15 workers on suspension. The rules of the United Auto Workers require workers be suspended and investigated before they could be discharged. Of those 15, according to Automotive News, 13 were fired and 2 are still on suspension. Chrysler insists build quality isn’t affected. Quality control and inspection are automated. The UAW also issued a statement that the behavior of the terminated employees is not indicative of the quality of other UAW staff.

Not even brewery workers be able to drink on the job

There is no excuse for going to work intoxicated. Not even executives get a “three martini lunch” anymore. An industrial site has to be absolutely safe at all times. Drinking and taking other illegal intoxicants is certainly contrary to safe practices.
